A remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site that was built between 3600 and 3200 B.C, the Ggantija temples, also known as the Megalithic Temples of Malta are a historic wonder that you should definitely catch a glimpse of when on a luxury yacht charter around the Maltese islands.
The name Ġgantija derives from the word ‘ġgant’, Maltese for giant, as Gozitans used to believe the temples were built by a race of giants. Not so surprising when you see the size of the limestone blocks from which it is constructed, some of these megaliths exceed five meters in length and weigh over fifty tons.
This is a genuinely stunning place and one where you can genuinely imagine the crowds gathering to watch an animal sacrifice among the stones. It's fascinating.
The rocks rise up on all sides, still standing 7 meters tall with the original paving stones covering the floor. The chambers of the two temples still contain altars, fire pits and decorative stonework.
