The 86m/180ft charter yacht AQUILA and the 50m/160ft charter yacht CHASSEUR were among the superyachts recognised last night at the ISS Design Awards in Florida.
Established in 1989 as a global voice for the superyacht industry, ISS (International Superyacht Society) annually honours the very best superyachts delivered over the past 12 months and, as always, the ceremony coincided with the opening day of FLIBS 2017.
This year, charter yachts dominated the nominations and, as revealed last night, AQUILA from Derecktor Shipyards scooped the award in the ‘Refit’ category and Christensen’s CHASSEUR came out on top in the ‘Power 40m - 65m’ category.
Originally launched in 2010, AQUILA emerged from Pendennis Shipyard last summer following an extensive, year-long refit. With the esteemed RWD and Susan Young Interiors heading up the design, much anticipation surrounded the transformation and the finished result did not disappoint.
Essentially gutted, the motor yacht saw 450 square meters of space across her five decks redesigned and upgraded. This required input from more than 1,000 craftspeople and she now has the distinction of being the largest yacht ever to be refitted in England.
CHASSEUR is light, sleek and clean and realises a seamless flow between the interior and surrounding environments.
Launched last autumn, CHASSEUR stands out among the Christensen fleet. In contrast to her dark, walnut-clad predecessors, she is light, sleek and clean and realises a seamless flow between the interior and surrounding environments.
Tonya Lance of Varo Interior Design achieved this by striking a balance between minimalism and modernism, taking full advantage of the natural light streaming through vast expanses of glazing and cladding the interior with ‘milk-glazed’ sycamore.
Other winners included the 96m/315ft superyacht FAITH. With design from De Voogt Naval Architects, RWD and Chahan Interior, this Feadship build won the ‘Best Power, 65m +’ category. Unfortunately, she is only available for private use.
The ‘Best Power 24m to 40m’ accolade went to the 39m/127ft superyacht JETSETTER from Dynamiq, while Baltic Yachts’ 40m/130ft sailing yacht ‘My Song’ picked up the prize for ‘Best Sail 24m to 40m’.
The 70m/230ft sailing yacht SYBARIS from Perini Navi, however, was honoured in the ‘Sail 40m +’ and ‘Interior’ categories. With naval architecture from Philippe Brand and interior styling from PH Design, she is not available on the charter market.
