M/Y Star of the Sea provides emergency relief to La Soufrière victims in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Living up to its name, the 34 meter Benetti luxury yacht STAR OF THE SEA has been providing invaluable assistance in the immediate aftermath resulting from multiple eruptions from La Soufrière volcano on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.

STAR OF THE SEA, normally used to luxury yacht charters around the stunning Caribbean island chain of St Vincent and the Grenadines, has provided a heroic turn offering rapid transportation of aid and much-needed supplies to displaced islanders evacuated from their homes. Some of these emergency items were purchased by the yacht's owner Bengt Mortstedt, including 2,500 bottles of water and vital sanitation supplies.

Star of the Sea helps aid efforts in St. Vincent

The eruptions from La Soufrière started on 9 April 2021, with scientists predicting more explosions to come, with the fallout potentially lasting weeks. STAR OF THE SEA, whose home port is on the smaller island of Bequia, was pleased to be able to offer assistance with the aid efforts to displaced locals on the larger island of St Vincent.

La Soufrière: history repeating itself

It has been almost exactly 40 years to the day since the volcano last erupted on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Fast forward to the recent eruptions, where violent blasts from La Soufrière shot plumes of smoke and debris nearly 4 miles into the sky and could be seen on the island of Canouan, over 40 miles away.

No deaths have been reported, however evacuation orders remain in place with approximately one third of the island off-limits, including closure of the nearby airspace. Further disruptions include power outages across the island and vital water supplies cut off in some areas.
