The artist Henri Matisse lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954, and a large part of the Matisse Museum's collection was donated by the artist himself.
As well as paintings, drawings, sculptures and examples of his famous paper cut-outs, the Matisse Museum also holds some of his personal effects including furniture and painting equipment.
Among the masterpieces on show are Nu bleu IV (Blue Nude IV), one of Matisse's most reproduced images, and the 8m-long Fleurs et Fruits (Flowers and Fruits), the largest Matisse works in France.

The museum, which also hosts regular temporary exhibitions, is housed in a 17th-century villa in the quiet suburb of Cimiez, north of the city center, surrounded by gardens, olive groves and archaeological remains, which are also worth a look when you visit.
Behind the museum are the extensive ruins of a 3rd-century Roman bath complex, while nearby are the remains of an amphitheater from the same period.
