Built at the beginning of the 20th century as a seaside residence for Baroness Beatrice de Rothschild, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a rose-hued jewel of the French Riviera, surrounded by immaculate gardens.
Baroness Beatrice de Rothschild, a member of the famous banking family, inherited an immense fortune on the death of her father in 1905 and set about building her dream seaside home on the French Riviera. Located in the peninsula Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, guests on a luxury charter yacht can easily access the villa for a day of romantic exploration.
Completed in 1912, the villa, built in elegant Italianate style in Cap Ferat, a short distance from Nice, became Beatrice's winter residence, while no expense was spared in the landscaping of the surrounding gardens.
A keen art collector, Beatrice indulged her passion for 18th-century porcelain, furniture and paintings, filling her home with the very best that money could buy. Beatrice died in 1934, leaving the villa and artworks to the Académie des Beaux-Arts and it is now open to the public.

The villa was designed in a flamboyant Italian Renaissance style, while the interior, with its pink marble columns, gilding and sumptuous 18th-century French furniture, is equally impressive. Look out for the Tiepolo canvas depicting Venus, adorning the ceiling of the Grand Salon, carpets from the Palace of Versailles, and a writing desk that belonged to Marie Antoinette.
Beatrice's collection of Sèvres porcelain said to be one of the most important in France, is on show along with Meissen porcelain and 18th-century costumes.
The villa's main garden was arranged in the form of a ship's deck, as viewed from the villa's loggia, while there are nine themed gardens to explore, including Spanish, Japanese, Florentine, and Provençal style gardens, laid out with a wide variety of Mediterranean and exotic flowering plants and water features.
