With a quarter of a mile of dazzling white sand lapped by bluer-than-blue ocean, it’s no surprise that Trunk Bay in the US Virgin Islands regularly ranks among the world’s top 10 beaches.
Standing out along the pristine northeast coast of St John, Trunk Bay is the showpiece of the US Virgin Islands National Park that covers two-thirds of the island.
A beach this beautiful never fails to go unnoticed and it does attract a fair number of visitors. But those on a Caribbean yacht charter are perfectly primed to arrive early in the morning, anchor off the coast and head ashore before the crowds arrive – or wait until later in the day when the beach-goers have dispersed.
Trunk Bay is also renowned for its superb snorkeling. Just off the beach, there is an underwater trail showcasing iridescent reefs and rainbow-hued fish. As well as being perfect for beginners, the trail is a great place to spot clusters of rarely-seen indigo blue truncates.
The beach’s best snorkeling, however, is around the small cay that lies 30 yards off the west of the shore (left as you face the water). As the cay provides better protection from the waves, there’s a richer selection of sea life here, with arrow crabs and juvenile spotted drum making regular appearances among the pristine coral.

Likewise, as most of those who snorkel here are day-trippers, those who get here early are more likely to have a snorkeling session to themselves. The flexibility of a superyacht charter means you can arrive before the crowds, and enjoy the place to yourself.
