Occupying a commanding position overlooking the sea on St Kitts, Brimstone Hill Fortress is one of the best preserved historical forts in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Begun in 1690, Brimstone Hill Fortress became one of the most important British fortifications in the Caribbean, seeing action against French naval forces through the 18th and early 19th centuries before being abandoned by the military in 1853.
The fortress has now been restored and the site, which forms part of a National Park, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
Occupying a steep hilltop, some 240m above sea level on the west coast of St Kitts, the fortress is an impressive sight and one easily accessible for those visiting the island during a private yacht charter in the Caribbean,
Today, the fortress is home to a museum displaying a collection of weaponry, military artifacts and other items chronicling the long history of the site, while visitors will also enjoy panoramic views over the Caribbean Sea from the cannon-lined battlements.
The fortress, which forms part of a National Park, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
At the heart of the fortress is the Fort George Citadel, an impressive polygonal structure enclosing a large courtyard.
