Bermuda
26 May - 27 Jun 2017
To take place in Bermuda in June of 2017, the 35th edition of the America's Cup promises to offer an exciting combination of modernity and tradition, as J-Class sailing yachts participate in the event for the first time in 80 years.
The America's Cup next race course will be in the intimate setting of Bermuda's Great Sound, offering great sailing conditions, a temperature-round climate and a spectacular backdrop of islands and beaches. The nearby Royal Naval Dockyard is the proposed base for teams and spectators as the America's Cup village.
A J-Class regatta will take place during the AC35 event, featuring a minimum of 6 classic sailing yachts - a nod the previous J Class era of the America's Cup, widely considered as one of the high points in the regatta's epic history.
In 2017, each team will compete in new AC62 catamarans, powered by highly-efficient wingsails and designed to 'fly' above the water on foils at speeds of approximately 50 mph. Racing will begin for all participants with the America's Cup Qualifiers to seed (and decide bonus points) in accordance with the results of the AC World Series (taking place in 2015 in Great Britain, Sweden and Bermuda).
The leading teams will then compete for the America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs and the opportunity to race the defending champion, ORACLE TEAM USA, in the America's Cup Finals in June 2017. The 2015 America's Cup offered heart-racing drama as Team USA pulled off a spectacular comeback against Emirates Team New Zealand.
...the intimate setting of The Great Sound offers great sailing conditions, a temperature-round climate and a spectacular backdrop of islands and beaches.
