Brazil, South America
12 Jun - 13 Jul 2014
On October 30th 2007 FIFA confirmed the selection of Brazil as the host for the 20th World Cup.
This will be the first time the tournament has been held in South America since Argentina hosted it in 1978, and the second time Brazil has hosted the competition; the first being in 1950. It will also mark the first time that two consecutive World Cups are to be held outside of Europe and the first time two consecutive World Cups have been hosted in the southern hemisphere.
The 12 host cities for the Cup were announced on 31st May 2009. Half of them will be holding their games in brand new stadiums built especially for the sporting event, and the stadium for Brasilia will be rebuilt. The remaiining five cities are currently updrading their venues.
Running from June 12th to July 13th, just weeks after the major European football leagues finish their seasons, the 2014 tournament will take place during Brazil's winter. It has recently been confirmed that the 2014 World Cup will be the first World Cup to use goal-line technology.
