The biggest and most famous in the world, the Rio Carnival is the most visited of all the Carnivals around the globe.
Although Carnival is celebrated in towns and villages throughout Brazil, as well as in other Catholic countris, Rio de Janeiro has long been recognised as the Carnival Capital of the world. It is not only the biggest of all the Carnivals, it has also set a standard against which all other Carnivals are compared to and is one of the most fascinating artistic events on the planet.
A wild 5-day celebration that takes place 40 days before Easter, the celebrations will officially begin on Friday 28th February 2014 and run until fat Tuesday (4th March 2014). It is is a spectacular annual celebration and foreign visitors alone tend to number around 500,000 each year.
Though the highlight of the whole Rio Carnival is the Samba Parade, there are also balls to attend, street parties to join and samba school night rehersals to sample. The street band of Ipanema is renowned as the most flamboyant and all the parties downtown, such as Cordão do Bola Preta are the largest.
