FLIBS 2017 Draws to a Close

By Rebecca Bradbury   6 November 2017

The 58th edition of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS 2017) drew to a close in Florida yesterday after another five successful days of superyacht showcases, industry exhibits and glittering social events.

The sun was shining for much of FLIBS 2017 which, as well as wonderfully illuminating the yachts on display, matched the upbeat mood of those in attendance.

Harbour-side show locations were abuzz with activity and YachtCharterFleet was at the heart of the action, undertaking exclusive yacht tours, networking with key players in industry and finding out about the latest launches and happenings in the world of boating.

The talk of the superyachts in show was the 73m/238ft charter yacht CLOUDBREAK, which was built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2016.

Her bold and striking lines, penned by Espen Oeino, drew no end of admiring glances while those lucky enough to be invited aboard were wowed by her Christian Liaigre-designed interior, which emulates the warm and welcoming atmosphere of a chalet but on a much more luxurious scale.

The inspiration behind this look was to create a welcoming ambience as the owner would be cruising in areas with extreme weather. Indeed, CLOUDBREAK is designed for adventures in the world’s harshest cruising grounds, reflecting the emerging trend of cruising to more far-flung destinations.

Other yachts demanding attention were two Feadship builds: the 66m/217ft motor yacht VANISH and the 60m/198ft motor yacht 'Rock It'. The former was launched last year and features a highly innovative transom, a striking free-standing staircase and an ingenious extendable balcony in the master suite.

Some of the best charter yachts in show, however, were the 78m/257ft superyacht TV, the 63m/208ft expedition yacht SURI, the 55m/182ft superyacht TURQUOISE and the 49m/160ft superyacht CHASSEUR, which was celebrating her recent win at the ISS Design Awards.

Beyond the yacht displays, there was plenty to keep show-goers occupied. A range of seminars enabled visitors to improve their boat handling skills, the Windward VIP Club Experience provided a sanctuary in which to do business, network and relax and live water sports demos took place at the AquaZone.
