Momentum Builds for the NZ Millennium Cup 2017

By Rebecca Bradbury   19 January 2017

The highly-anticipated 2017 NZ Millennium Cup is getting ready to welcome an impressive fleet of sailing yachts to New Zealand’s Bay of Island before the event gets underway on Tuesday 24th January.

At this year’s New Zealand Millennium Cup, eight entries will fight it out on a selection of challenging courses which weave their way through the spectacular emerald waters of the Bay of Islands.

The three days of racing begin on 25th January, after a welcoming function on the event’s opening night, and conclude with a prize-giving ceremony in the evening of 27th January.

Three of the contending yachts are part of the global charter fleet, including a regular at the event, the 34m/111ft sailing yacht SILVERTIP from the New Zealand shipyard Yachting Developments.

Both the 43m/141ft charter yacht CAVALLO from Baltic Yachts and Southern Winds’ 32m/104ft charter yacht FARFALLA, however, will be competing at the event for the very first time.

They all face stiff competition from last year’s winner TAWERA and the other repeat entries ‘Janice of Wyoming’, ANTAEUS and ‘Steinlager 2’. First-timer PUMULA, which was awarded the World Superyacht Awards’ Sailing Yacht of the year in 2013, will also compete.

Momentum has already been building for the 2017 edition as New Zealand shipyard Orams Marine reported in October last year that several of the competitors are scheduled to stop at the yard for service before the event gets underway to ensure they are in fighting fit condition.

FARFALLA has already been serviced, undergoing the installation of a removable inner forestay and removable bowsprit, and Janice of Wyoming has also had some upgrades at the yard.

The NZ Millennium Cup looks to promote New Zealand as a premier destination for racing, refits and new builds as well as to showcase its cruising grounds, resplendent in natural beauty.

After the racing is over, CAVALLO will be available for charter in New Zealand before heading to Fiji in April, and SILVERTIP and FARFALLA are also open for bookings in these spectacular South Pacific destinations.
