New Zealand Initiate Strategy to Attract Superyachts

By Editorial Team   31 March 2014

Today, New Zealand Marine officially announced a new 'Destination New Zealand Superyacht Attraction Initiative' which will see the association along with government bodies jointly promote the country as a destination for superyachts.

Made up of representatives from Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED), Tourism New Zealand, New Zealand Trade & Enterprise and NZ Marine, some of which have attempted to develop New Zealand as superyacht destination individually over the years, a collaborative effort was decided as the best approach. Each organisation will bring forward different areas of experience and expertise to promote awareness of the benefits and logistics of cruising New Zealand waters, supported by a presence at significant worldwide yacht shows and continual interaction with industry media.

Working to promote all the elements that make New Zealand a desirable cruising destination, the group will focus on three key areas – endorsing New Zealand as a desirable cruising destination for private and charter yachts, promoting and expanding infrastructure and facilities within New Zealand and around the world and advertising the proficiencies of the refit, repair and manufacturing segments.

Boasting cosmopolitan bases for crew and over 15,000km of untouched coastline, it is estimated that in 2013 alone, visiting superyachts brought $185 million of marine industry spend and $95 million of tourism spend to the country. The goal now is to increase the number of cruising yachts from 625 in 2013 to 750 in 2018, their marine industry spend to $352 million and tourism spend to $190 million by the same year.

Recent developments, including the extension of the Temporary Import Entry from 12 to 24 months, are key steps to increasing New Zealand’s attraction as a charter destination. This, along with continued investment and the growth of existing facilities will help New Zealand to grow even more as a top-class superyacht destination.
