Demand for Expedition Superyacht Charters Growing

By Editorial Team   13 June 2014

The announcement this week that the world’s largest expedition yacht, the 155m/377’ LUNA, has now joined the global charter fleet follows a trend in the market that has seen explorer vessels become an increasingly popular choice with charterers.

This popularity for expedition yacht charters has stemmed from a growing demand from discerning travellers wanting experiential travel. People are more and more looking for unique experiences where they can see, do, eat and learn new things in far-flung destinations rather than visit the busy ports of West Mediterranean every summer.

In an interview with our friends at Superyacht Times during the 2014 Singapore Yacht Show, Tony Hambrook of Alloy Yachts commented that he has seen a rise in the popularity of new-build expedition yachts: ‘Owners are looking to spend extended periods of time on board with their families.’ This new breed of explorer yachts encompass the engineering and state-of-the-art technology needed for long-range cruising while offering all the luxury amenities and comfort of the best superyachts on the market.

There has certainly been a flurry of highly luxurious explorer yachts entering the global charter fleet in the past couple of years, including the 73m/240’ expedition superyacht GRACE E which was launched earlier this year to international acclaim. She was built as part of Perini Navi’s Picchiotti Vitrivius series, the same series as the 2010-built 50m/161’ explorer yacht EXUMA which went on to win a number of industry awards including the 2011 Superyacht Awards ‘Motor Yacht of the Year’ and the 2010 World Yacht Trophies ‘Most Innovative Yacht of the Year’.

Another of the top five largest expedition yachts in the world, the 71.4m/234’ 1987-built ENIGMA XK recently underwent an extensive refit project and was re-launched late last year as a high quality charter yacht. Fully-equipped for adventurous cruising, many of her original design features ensure power and performance on the water whilst her beautiful interior styling and whilst her sleek, stylish interior and huge range of facilities offer an environment of absolute comfort.

Of course it’s not just these magnificent superyachts that are attracting charter client’s, there are charter destinations in all corners of the globe that offer unique experiences. From gliding through glacial fjords in Antarctica to learning about indigenous cultures in the depths of Papua New Guinea, this kind of world exploration that a yacht vacation can provide are moments that will never be forgotten.
